Prysmian Romania Marks a New Milestone: First DTAC Monitoring Systems Order for PPC
Prysmian Romania is strengthening its position as a leader in smart solutions for energy infrastructure by completing the first order of DTAC monitoring systems for the local distribution operator, Retele Electrice Romania (part of the PPC group, a regional high-voltage network operator). This project marks an important milestone in the modernization of high-voltage underground networks in Bucharest and reflects Prysmian's commitment to supporting the transition to safer, more efficient, and more sustainable networks.
A Benchmark Project for Urban Networks
The project targets the rehabilitation and replacement of high-voltage cables over a 6 km distance between the Grozăvești and Filaret substations – an essential area for supplying electricity to Bucharest’s sectors 4 and 5. The implementation includes modern protection and monitoring technologies that optimize maintenance and reduce the risk of unplanned outages, ensuring stable service for consumers, and supporting the sustainable development of urban infrastructure.
The end beneficiary is Rețele Electrice România, part of the PPC group, and the acquisition and installation of the equipment were carried out through the partner SIMCO INTERNATIONAL IMPEX SRL, a key player in the field of electrical solutions, along with the support of specialized personnel from Rețele Electrice Romania.
In July 2025, Rețele Electrice România successfully completed the testing and commissioning of the new 110 kV underground line Grozăvești–Filaret, with a transport capacity of 170 MVA, approximately 50 MVA more than the previous line. This new infrastructure enhances supply security and is part of a broader strategic plan to efficiently redistribute energy loads among the three main injection sources in the national transmission network.
The Technological Solution Delivered by Prysmian Romania – PRY-CAM Technology: Smart Monitoring, Proactive Intervention
The solution delivered by Prysmian Romania is based on the PRY-CAM platform, an integrated asset monitoring system that combines:
- Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) – fiber optic-based distributed temperature monitoring, capable of detecting thermal overloads or early-stage faults in real time, preventing cable damage.
- DAS-C – advanced acoustic monitoring, which, after a period of analyzing and learning the usual noises and vibrations along the 110 kV underground cable route, detects abnormal vibrations and sounds along the line, providing a clear picture of the network’s integrity.
These technologies provide real-time data, automatic alarms, and intelligent analysis via the dedicated DxS software, which is fully integrable with existing SCADA systems.
The installation was fully delivered to the Filaret Electrical Substation and includes a dedicated IT rack, DTS and DAS equipment, servers, the DxS software platform, a local workstation, on-site and remote commissioning, integration into the existing SCADA infrastructure, consumables and technical accessories tailored to installation requirements, SAT tests, as well as options for maintenance, training, and field technical support.
The installation was carried out with the help of the on-site technical team, while the software configuration and implementation were supported remotely by the PRYSMIAN EOSS (Electronic and Optical Sensing Solution) project team.
The optical fiber laid along the cable route serves as a distributed sensor for both temperature and acoustic monitoring.
The solution is modular and scalable, reflecting Prysmian’s philosophy of delivering turnkey solutions that combine technological performance with ease of implementation and operation.
About PRY-CAM – The Technology Behind the Solution
PRY-CAM is a technology developed by the Prysmian Group for continuous monitoring of electrical networks. It enables real-time assessment of operating conditions, reduces maintenance costs, prevents failures, and extends asset lifespan. The solution is compatible with voltages up to 600 kV, making it ideal for modern transmission and distribution networks.
Regional Impact and Strategic Opportunity
“This implementation is not only a step forward for Rețele Electrice România, but also a strategic opportunity for Prysmian. The expertise gained in Romania can be replicated regionally, including in Greece—where PPC is the main network operator—opening the door for expanding Prysmian’s best practices and technologies across European networks.”
